Momel's Take: The Unwritten Rules of Blogging

**Or some reminders I often say to myself when I have all that time and no friends to talk to.

**Obviously, this is a repost. Cannibalized, if you may, and I'm saying that because I'm not having none of that cybercrime bullshit biting my rabbit-shit tits. I'll write something else soon. Muahness from Pasig Cirehhh! Werd.

1. Be polite. Remember the bit about not shitting in anyone else's backyard. Don't link a site that loads malicious software.

2. Bloggers love the attention, and they'll love you more for the comments. That means you actually took the time to speed read and digest what they're bitching about. Sure, it won't hurt to spare the details, but a generic comment is just self promotion plus the effort to verify the word string.

3. Yes, bloggers are people too. See rule #2.

4. "Just dropping by." As much as possible, if you're neither in his or her blogroll or an offline friend, avoid typing those three words in the tag board. Bloggers love the promotion, but that doesn't compare to the love of gratification for being read.

5. Blogrolls aren't there for show. There's a good reason why you're keeping this list of certain bloggers. Drop by if you have the time. But remember rule #4.

6. You don't have to exchange links if you don't want to. You will be clicking on those links every so often, so you better make sure that you're returning to a worthwhile read.

7. You don't have to comment back if you don't want to. But remember rules #1, #2, and #5. And the Golden Rule. And the Bible. And the Philippine Constitution. And all those GMRC subjects in grade school. Okay, scratch the Bible, but remember everything else.

8. Always introduce yourself.

9. There's never a boring blogger if you take the time to return. But then, remember that even online, first impressions still apply.

10. Blog about anything. It's not somebody else's space. It's not MY space. It's your space. That My Space bit was me trying to be funny. Take a picture. Grab a copy. But remember kids, it's still YOUR space.

  1. ...oh, but thank YOU momel for saying these things..!

(although once upon a time, and not too long ago, medyo tanga at bobo pa ako sa blog rules, guilty ako ng ilan "crimes"...)

MY blogroll are people special to me.

    there.

OMG, i don't remember my Phil constitution!

    just trying to be funny.

  2. Har! No problem @ Erik

What's with the flood ha! He hee, it's cool, really. And that's a difficult situation you have pala. Well, you can do it, uhm, "piece by piece." Meaning, don't drop the bomb in one piece.

He'll eventually get the message, pero be polite while you're doing it para there's no hard feelings.

    Cheers!

Anyway, thanks for commentn' on my recent post. I really appreciate it. Haha.

    Cheers!

  11. hope it helps! @ alex

yup, I think that all that blog-hopping's meant for something else other than excessive self promotion @ trisha and jhed. I mean, there are still people who blog hop to look for interesting reads like those I have in my roll. he hee

bryan, that cute 25 million snaps comment earns you a big bag of "he hee"

    Cheers all!

    ReplyDelete
  12. oo nga @ bryan, sino ba si HE? @ erik

I totally agree with you @ devilicious, there is still such a phrase as a "worthwhile read." They ARE worthwhile for some reason.

  13. i really really agree with this point:

    2. Bloggers love the attention, and they'll love you more for the comments. That means you actually took the time to speed read and digest what they're bitching about. Sure, it won't hurt to spare the details, but a generic comment is just self promotion plus the effort to verify the word string.

Sometimes, i get those unusual comments that come out of nowhere (not spam comments, ive already blocked those), having this one-liner comment about my post, and are capped off by a link to their site. When you go visit the site, you find a pathetic site with lots of 0-comment entries... i dont want this to happen to me! thats why i like point two!

    generic comment

I suspect that these sinister bloggers randomly use that 'next blog' button on the blogger search bar. Not only does this action enable them to leave random generic comments (for self-promotion), it also reflect on statcounter! and you know bloggers love traffic!

    ReplyDelete
  14. They follow the cheating rules @ krislan

I mean, why blog hop for the traffic when you're peddling an unlikely image of yourself, right? I mean, common, generic comments beget the same courtesy of another generic comment.

But I think they already know what's in store for them anyway.

    Cheers!

  15. i confess: the just dropping by thing got me. ha ha. but no ouch, because that's true. :)

they'll love you more for the comments. That means you actually took the time to speed read and digest what they're bitching about.

i cannot say more. i actually nod in agreement to many of the rules you have written there, but this one i like best. :)

  16. For me naman @ IE, it's alright to make papansin if you'r either an offline friend or in the blogroll. Pero I'm sure naman na if this certain blog is THAT interesting, then anybody can be more creative than those three words diba?

    Cheers!

so how should i approach you nah?

    hehe nangungulit lang =P

    ReplyDelete
  20. pero nakakatuwa lang.

kita mo nga naman, these days may mga tinatawag na rin tayong blog rules diba.

    ReplyDelete
  21. wow, thanks for dropping by @ stellar. These rules are just personal reminders, I mean.

But then again, oh wow, look below, spam! Exactly just what I needed!

    Cheers!

  22. I'm guilty as well on the "just dropping by" rule. Sige, for nor on, wala ng ganun. Wala na ding, "Bloghopping" saka "Hi XXXXX." The best tong Blog Rules mo. Mas okay pa conmpared dun sa Blog Rules ni Jessica Zafra. I'll repost this in my blog.

And as for the SPAM. Hay naku, hindi yan SPAMMER. I know kung sino yan. Pero at least medyo may cause naman yung SPAM.

As for Blogrolls, yeah, i do visit them all. Di ako naglalagay sa blogroll ko na hindi ko man lang binibisita at least 1x a week. I'll be editing my blogroll (called Hot and Cold) this week and I'll put you in it.

Okay, I'll do no. 8... I'm Toe. :) And I did read this entry, so it was more than just "dropping by." :)

Seriously, I like this list... hope more bloggers read it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. hey, thanks for NOT JUST dropping by @ mrdj and toe

feel free, mrdj, to quote this list anytime. don't forget to quote me back.

and yeah @ toe, thanks for that. if more bloggers actually read this, then it's going to be a very interesting community.

    cheers!

  26. Nice rules. It wouldn't hurt you a bit if you would follow all of them. Thanks for the tips. I don't consider them rules.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah @ third

It's a preference thing. I call them rules. You choose not to. That's why there's my name on the title. I think of them as rules.

    And thanks for dropping by!

    :)

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  28. awesome rules. i swear i didn't rip you off.

    just dropping by. Ü

it's number 8 that pisses that heck out of me plus i get a lot of these - can we exchange links requsts! DANG! i actually hate those. i have my own rule too, you know. if i find something hilariously funny or something interesting in somebody else's blog, i honestly don't care if he/she links me back, because i will surely add her/him not only on my blogroll but also on my bloglines which will actually give him a point.

yet bloggers sometimes are so ridiculously blatant on self promotion - that's why i spouse social climbing! hahahaha

  30. Hi..my name is Je..and i'm a fan of your Blogs..TOOT! haha!!!

    good read. :D

  31. Ugh!!! I have a couple of people in mind who need to read this and learn. But then again, they don't really read. They breeze through. Like fart through jeans. Leaving a funny taste in the mouth. O ha! May ganung metaphor!

  32. Tnx for the Blog Rules, this is just plain and simple, yet very important! ROCK ON!!! =)

  33. Minsan ko nang naitanong sa blog ko kung may mga patakaran bang sinusunod sa blogging. Ngayon alam ko nang meron nga at meron na akong basehan. Salamat! :D

  34. About Number 9, I have encountered really boring bloggers. Those who post stuff that don't make sense, don't benefit anyone, not even bad enough to be good. They made me wanna slash my wrists. But I enjoy their boringness. Makes for a good conversation topic with other mean bloggers.

I'm so happy someone made this rule:

'You don't have to comment back if you don't want to.'

because I sure as hell hate polite-commenting. Thanks to our social networks, we don't anymore feel obliged to comment obligatorally. But some blogs are worth kissing the asses of, and going back to. Wink, wink.

    Anyway, I'm just dropping by.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really appreciate this. At first I thought it'd just be bullshit but these are really good rules. Peace Momel
